Indonesia has put forward three environmentally sustainable initiatives aimed at reaching zero emissions

Airlangga Hartarto, the Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, proposed the establishment of a cohesive clean energy framework, advocating for a shift towards a transportation sector powered by clean energy and emphasizing the importance of energy efficiency in order to meet the objective of achieving net-zero emissions.

Indonesia proposes three green initiatives to achieve zero emissions

During the second Ministerial Meeting of the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) held in Jakarta on Wednesday, the minister emphasized that the establishment of an integrated clean energy system is achievable by enhancing regional electricity connectivity. Hartarto conveyed his conviction that robust power connectivity would contribute to the development of a more resilient and adaptable clean energy framework.

At the same time, Indonesia seeks to utilize its abundant renewable resources to produce different types of renewable energy, such as hydrogen and ammonia, according to the minister. He highlighted the importance of the second initiative, which aims to promote the use of sustainable fuels in the transportation sector. In this regard, he underscored the need for government commitment to support this transition by developing the necessary infrastructure in both rural and urban areas.

The minister emphasized the importance of enhancing energy efficiency across multiple sectors, particularly focusing on industrial operations. He outlined that the third initiative involves establishing an emissions standard, offering incentives, and fostering the development of technologies that are crucial for improving energy efficiency.

The approach we adopt for implementing decarbonization, aligning climate objectives with economic development, and enhancing energy resilience is encapsulated in this initiative, he clarified. Hartarto emphasized that these three initiatives create an opportunity for AZEC nations to work together and share innovative solutions in order to collectively meet their decarbonization goals.

The AZEC initiative, aimed at promoting decarbonization, was introduced by Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida during the G20 Summit held in Bali in November 2022. This initiative includes participation from Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Brunei Darussalam, and Australia.
